Volunteer Opportunities

There are many exciting ways for you to get involved and help out at the Santa Ana Zoo! To help inform you of the incredible opportunities here at the Zoo, please watch our overview video.

If you are interested in becoming a Zoo Docent, a Zoo Ambassador, or supporting any of our numerous education and conservation efforts, you will find the applicable forms and contact information below the video.


If you like sharing the wonders of the animal kingdom with children, the weekday docent program is for you. Docents lead school tours and assist with our traveling outreach program weekday mornings.

On the weekends, the Zoo Ambassadors share the Zoo’s conservation message through hands-on artifact carts, activity stations, live animal encounters, public presentations, and other guest interactions. You must be able to work independently and have good public relations skills.

Every month, something new and interesting is happening at the Zoo! Whether it is the Zoo-B-Que, Zoofari or Boo at the Zoo, we're always in need of volunteers to assist with the events. Work on kids’ crafts, scoop ice cream or paint faces.

Have you always wanted to be a train engineer? Volunteer engineers convey guests around the Zoo aboard our Zoofari Express providing an informative and entertaining experience while assisting in maintenance and operations.

Is office work your cup of tea? Do you enjoy working on computers? Then helping out filing, stuffing, folding, labeling, or entering data may be your perfect match. No experience required. It's fun, easy and interesting. Work mornings or afternoons, weekdays or weekends.

Zookeeper internships are available during the summer months of May-September. Zookeeper interns are involved in all aspects of animal care in both the Crean Family Farm and the Main Zoo, including exhibit care and maintenance, diet preparation, enrichment, and behavior observation and documentation. Zookeeping is a physically demanding profession, subjecting interns to a variety of physical demands and environmental factors.
Minimum age: 18.
Internship program currently closed until further notification.

Volunteers are needed to assist the Zoo keepers with tasks such as cleaning animal exhibits, cutting diets, preparing enrichment items, cleaning around exhibits, and general exhibit maintenance. This is physically demanding work that involves dust, dirt, hay, animal dander, and various outdoor weather conditions.
Minimum age: 16 in the Crean Family Farm and 18 in the Main Zoo.
