The Friends of Santa Ana Zoo (FOSAZ) consistently generates over half a million dollars in net revenue annually to support the Santa Ana Zoo.
The Santa Ana Zoo’s 33rd annual Zoofari Gala was one for the record books. Held on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2025, and themed “Journey to Emerald City,” the sold-out black-tie fundraiser welcomed 355 guests and raised nearly $300,000, the most ever in the event’s history.
Hosted by the Friends of Santa Ana Zoo (FOSAZ), the evening brought together Zoo supporters, city leaders, and passionate conservationists for a celebration of impact, imagination, and generosity. The grounds were transformed into an Oz-inspired wonderland with dazzling emerald décor by R.W.B. Party Props and a yellow brick road that led guests to themed photo backdrops and whimsical touches throughout the event.
“The night was absolutely incredible, thanks to your passion and generosity, we raised nearly $300,000 to support the Zoo! That’s the most ever in Zoofari history,” said Cat Decker. “We made history, we had fun, and most importantly, we made a difference. Your support directly helps the Zoo and the animals we care for, and your impact is real and lasting.”
During the VIP reception, attendees enjoyed up-close encounters with animal ambassadors including a blue-tongued skink, parrot, armadillo, hedgehog, and more. Guests also had an exclusive opportunity to visit the Butterfly Exhibit and preview the new River’s Edge View Deck and Primate Habitats, which are now complete and awaiting their new residents, giant river otters and spider monkeys.
A particularly heartfelt moment of the night came during a tribute to Debbie Newmeyer (1954–2024), affectionately known as Wanda the Witch. A longtime supporter and beloved figure at the Zoo, Debbie’s joyful spirit helped shape events like Zoofari and Boo at the Zoo. Her husband, Tom Newmeyer, accepted the honor in her memory while FOSAZ Board Member Howard Hall shared touching remarks reflecting Debbie’s legacy. “Debbie’s dedication to the Santa Ana Zoo and the children it has enchanted was unmatched. Zoofari and Boo at the Zoo would not be the same without her unique enthusiasm and generosity of spirit. She is loved and missed by all.”
The Zoo also recognized the vital work of the United States Geological Survey (USGS), whose team of biologists operates on-site at the Santa Ana Zoo. Zoo Director Ethan Fisher highlighted their conservation research on species such as mountain lions, golden eagles, and wildcats, as well as their work studying post-wildfire habitats. A key focus of the collaboration with the Zoo is the preservation of the critically endangered mountain yellow-legged frog, a species native to just three mountain ranges in Southern California.
Guests were treated to a gourmet dinner catered by Parties by Panache, complemented by a hosted bar and the event’s signature cocktail, the sparkling green “Emerald Enchanted.”
Henry DiCarlo, KTLA 5 Morning News co-anchor and Emmy and Golden Mic Award winner, returned as emcee and auctioneer for the evening. His charisma and warmth helped elevate the energy throughout the event, driving a hugely successful live auction.
Live auction items included a dazzling evening for four adults at the world-renowned Magic Castle in Hollywood, hosted by the Zoo’s own resident magician Jeff LeMasters-Tahir and his wife Mary. This exclusive dinner and magic performance was truly an enchanting night to remember and was won by Brian Summerfield.
A gourmet four-course dinner for ten, donated by Parties by Panache, brought fine dining into the home, complete with wine pairings, hors d’oeuvres, and full service to create a seamless, Oz-worthy culinary experience. The winning bidder was Joylynn Mahoney.
Howard Hall donated a sleek, modern Victrola Stream Carbon Turntable, along with a pair of SONOS Era 100 speakers, and three rare vinyl records, Elton John’s Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Willie Nelson’s Somewhere Over the Rainbow, and Neil Young’s Somewhere Under the Rainbow, for the ultimate vinyl lover’s dream setup. This music lover’s package went home with Lilly Razai.
Board Member Patty McClendon contributed a stunning Italian green leather handbag, sourced in Prague, complete with interchangeable straps. The chic tote came stuffed with $100 in California Scratchers (courtesy of Rip Ribble) and over $1,000 in mystery cash, thanks to generous contributions from the FOSAZ Board, Advisory Board, and Zoo Staff. This coveted item soared to $3,400, purchased by Cindy and Gary Matumoto, who celebrated their 34th wedding anniversary that evening.
A sky-high adventure aboard the Goodyear Blimp offered two guests an unforgettable 30-minute flight above the Southern California coastline, an aerial journey of a lifetime. The experience went to Minnette Gallado.
The Bigalke Sisters donated a week-long seaside escape to the Monarch Grand Vacations Resort in Dana Point, complete with a Stanley cooler filled with beach essentials, perfect for whale watching season or a coastal retreat. This coastal getaway was claimed by Evan Levy.
KTLA’s own Henry DiCarlo treated four lucky guests to a behind-the-scenes VIP Morning News Experience, including a live taping, studio tour, meet-and-greet with anchors, and a private walk through the historic Sunset Bronson Studios, home to legendary shows and the birthplace of the “talkie” film era. This coveted experience was so popular it sold twice, each going for $2,600.
Zoo Director Ethan Fisher offered an exclusive, behind-the-scenes VIP tour of the Santa Ana Zoo for five guests, featuring close-up encounters with beloved animals and a narrated train ride on the Zoofari Express. This insider’s adventure also sold twice, fetching $1,300 each.
And finally, guests raised their paddles for the “Return to Ooz” Fund-a-Need, supporting the purchase of a $12,000 veterinary laser to aid in surgery and healing treatments for the Zoo’s animals, because even sloths and monkeys need a little magic now and then.
The evening was chaired by Cat Decker, Executive Director of FOSAZ, whose vision and dedication were instrumental in producing the event’s most successful year yet.
Following the close of the live auction, guests danced under the stars to the energetic tunes of Groove Factory, celebrating a night that blended elegance and purpose with pure joy. “This is a night we’ll never forget,” added Amos Bracero, president of the FOSAZ board. “The love and commitment shown by our guests, sponsors, and community partners is what keeps the Santa Ana Zoo thriving.”
