The zoo is always working toward improvements for animals, visitors, and sustainability.

Primate Forest

  • Demolition continues on the old habitats and new habitat installation is starting this week.
  • Some primates will be relocating to Primate Trails.

River’s Edge

  • Public pathways are open for viewing.
  • Interpretive sculptures and entry sign are being installed next week.
  • Water system commissioning is set in a few weeks, including pool activation and staff training.
  • Interior caging and two new primate habitats will begin construction soon.
  • Animals should be introduced in the fall.

HIVE Educational Building

  • The state granted us a funding extension.
  • More budget details expected late May or June.

Children’s Zoo

  • A number of buildings are being repainted to spruce them up and bring in a fun, playful atmosphere.
  • Construction of the fencing around alligator habitat is in process.
  • Various buildings are receiving interior spruce ups including paint and wood repair.

Goat Encounters

  • The goats love the railings and bridges. The animal care team gives them branches and browse and they come running, delighting guests and adding a fun new element to the experience.
  • Please call before your visit to confirm that it is open at the time of visit.

Pathways Project

  • Installation of part of the pathway will occur end of May/early June.  This will temporarily affect visitor pathways and we’ll setup detours.

Butterfly Habitat

  • Butterflies are on-site, with an opening date to be announced soon and will remain open through September.
  • Cool weather is affecting activity, but a second shipment has arrived.
  • New species like the colorful Asian Birdwing may be introduced.

Animals

  • A new hedgehog is in quarantine and will join our Ambassador Animal program.
  • Pygmy marmosets have arrived, and more Mexican spider monkeys are in progress.
  • We sadly lost two colobus monkeys, a titi monkey, and our violet turaco ambassador animal due to natural, age-related causes.
  • A new male colobus is expected in 4–6 weeks to accompany our remaining female, pending travel and state requirements.
