June 14, 2016: The Santa Ana Zoo Welcomes Community to Celebrate Life and Enjoy the Baby Animals and Beautiful Butterfly Gardens
The Santa Ana Zoo is Open Daily from 10 am - 4 pm; Baby Ocelot and Baby Sloth are "First Births" for the Local Zoo

The Santa Ana Zoo at Prentice Park celebrated multiple visits from the stork this past July, each with fuzzy baby monkeys.

Celebrate summer with a visit to the Santa Ana Zoo! Come enjoy the Zoo's lush landscaping and growing babies.

Current community favorites include the Zoo's fourth baby giant anteater, two playful baby howler monkeys, the Zoo's first two-toed sloth, and a beautiful young ocelot named Neto. The births, which span over the last several months, are all part of the Santa Ana Zoo's ongoing participation in conservation programs facilitated by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). Through these life-saving species conservation programs, zoos work cooperatively to manage threatened or endangered animal populations within AZA-accredited Zoos and Aquariums. Over the years, the Santa Ana Zoo has welcomed many newborn animals and continues to serve as a proud member of these programs. "The Santa Ana Zoo is the perfect place for local residents and guests of all ages to take a break from the day-to-day to celebrate new life and enjoy the beauty of nature," said Kent Yamaguchi, Zoo Director. "We are thrilled to watch our babies playing in the sunshine and enjoying the summertime for all our guests to see."

Adding to its animal family and expanding its sustainability efforts, the Santa Ana Zoo is home to 600 giant millipedes, which represent more than 120,000 legs in motion. "We started our arthropod sustainability effort with 30 giant millipedes and have since watched our invertebrate community grow 20 times larger in under three years," notes Ethan Fisher, Zoo Registrar. "It's amazing to see these creatures thrive and watch as guests are amazed at how much the giant millipede contributes to the health, legacy, and lifecycle of the world we live in." Come meet these crawling critters during regularly scheduled weekend animal presentations.

As part of its sustainability efforts, the Santa Ana Zoo joined a "save the species" initiative in 2015 for an endangered group of local animals, the mountain yellow-legged frog. Working with several governmental organizations and spearheaded by the United States Geological Service's Western Ecological Research Center, the Zoo is building a safe and secure amphibian breeding facility, called the Frog Pod, next to the Zoo's bald eagle habitat. Within the secure breeding facility zoo staff will raise these endangered frogs for release back to the wild. Currently under construction, visitors will have a window into the Zoo's efforts starting summer 2016.

Diving into additional conservation programs, the Santa Ana Zoo is also preparing for the arrival of giant river otters in 2018. Native to South America and weighing up to 70 pounds these high-energy animals will be front and center in a beautiful new otter habitat debuting in the Zoo's renovated Amazon's Edge Exhibit. "We are so happy to see all that's underway at the Santa Ana Zoo and watch our animals enjoy their habitats and help educate our guests on the beauty of the species they represent," concludes Yamaguchi. "It's a wonderful time of year for family and friends to visit the Zoo. The grounds are awesome for photos and the babies are blessings that we're thrilled to share with our community."

The Santa Ana Zoo is home to more than 260 animals, including 60 of the most interesting and engaging monkeys and several endangered species, like the golden lion tamarins. The Zoo is open daily from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm. The Conservation Carrousel Rides are $3 each and Zoofari Express Train Rides are $4 each, and combo tickets are $6 each. Children under 2 are free to ride with paid adult on the Train and adults standing with children on the Carrousel are free.
